A Dinner and Discussion About Food and How Policies We Vote for Make a Difference
With the federal election around the corner, The Nourish Project and Peterborough Food Action Network are co-hosting a free dinner event called Eat Think Vote, on Thursday, September 26, 2019. Eat Think Vote will bring together members of the community with federal candidates in the Peterborough-Kawartha riding, providing an opportunity for the public speak directly to candidates about food issues that matter to them.
The hope for Eat Think Vote, a campaign that is widespread across the country through Food Secure Canada, is to make food an election issue. “Policies about food are more important than many of us realize,” said Lauren Kennedy, Registered Dietitian at Peterborough Public Health. “Food affects our health. Eating healthier has been estimated to be able to prevent one in five deaths, globally!”
But the importance of food goes beyond reducing trips to the doctor’s office. Kennedy added, “Food is also linked to our environment, social justice, Indigenous food sovereignty, the local food system, education, culture and community, and our economy.”
The event will be held at Peterborough Public Health, 185 King Street, on Thursday September 26, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. Registration is free and required in advance, by Tuesday, September 24, as space is limited. To register, email events@nourishproject.ca or call 705-743-3526 ext. 119.
Media and the public are welcome to attend this event, or to follow along on social media with the hashtag #EatThinkVote, or on Facebook @foodsecurecanada or Twitter @FoodSecureCAN. More information on this campaign can be found at www.eatthinkvote.ca.
